What is ‘Dholl Puri’ ?
Dholl Puri is one of Mauritius’ most iconic street foods, carrying with it both history and heart. It was introduced by Indian immigrants in the 19th century, inspired by the Indian “paratha,” but adapted over time to suit local taste. Unlike the flaky paratha, Mauritians transformed it into a soft, thin flatbread made from ground yellow split peas (dholl) mixed into the dough, then rolled out and cooked on a hot tawa.
Served warm and usually in pairs, Dholl Puri is filled with flavorful curries, rougaille, chutneys, and sometimes pickles, making it a complete and satisfying meal wrapped in simplicity. For many, it’s more than just food—it’s a symbol of Mauritian identity, a dish tied to everyday life, childhood memories, and moments shared with family and friends.
