Welcome to Mauritius Bites

Mauritius Bites is here to showcase the beautiful island that I, Ridj, proudly call home—Mauritius. I created this website as part of my final year project for my MA in Web Design and Content Planning at the University of Greenwich. More than just an academic project, this is something deeply personal, born from my love for the island, its people, and above all, its food. It’s a project that combines my passion for design with my roots, and I hope it inspires both locals and visitors to experience Mauritius more authentically and memorably.

The primary objective of this website is to enable both locals and international tourists to discover the rich and diverse flavours of Mauritius while enjoying the island’s most breathtaking spots. Mauritius goes beyond its cuisine; it’s about savouring meals surrounded by breathtaking mountains, tranquil beaches, cascading waterfalls, and secluded viewpoints. From grabbing a hot dholl puri to enjoy at a cliffside lookout, to tasting fresh seafood by the ocean, we want to inspire you to connect food with scenic locations, flavour with memory. Whether you’re rediscovering your island as a local or exploring as a visitor, we aim to guide you on a journey that blends taste, culture, and scenery into one unforgettable experience.

My Inspiration

I was born and raised in Mauritius. Growing up, I witnessed how small food vendors, those who serve real, authentic Mauritian flavours, are often overshadowed by bigger companies. While large businesses dominate advertising and tourism campaigns, the local vendors who carry the heart of our culture are too often left behind. This reality inspired me to create Mauritius Bites. I wanted to provide a platform to these voices, to showcase the true tastes of Mauritius, and to remind both locals and visitors that the island’s story is best told through the meals shared at small stalls, street corners, and family-run kitchens.

What to expect?

On Mauritius Bites, you’ll discover a carefully handpicked selection of food spots that I personally believe serve the most authentic Mauritian cuisine. Each recommendation comes with more than just directions—I’ve paired every food spot with a nearby scenic location, so you can enjoy your meal while taking in the beauty of the island.

You will also find the story behind the dishes you’re about to taste, giving you a deeper connection to the culture and history they carry. For this project, I chose to focus on three iconic dishes: minne bouille, dholl puri, and seafood. These dishes are not only delicious but also rich in heritage, each holding a special place in the hearts of Mauritians and in the story of our island.

My Values

Authenticity – I believe in showcasing the true flavours of Mauritius, not commercialised versions, but the real food that locals love and grow up with.

Community – Supporting small vendors and family-run businesses is central to my mission. They are the ones who carry our culture forward, often with little recognition.

Culture & Heritage – Every dish tells a story of immigration, tradition, and identity. Preserving and sharing these stories is just as important as enjoying the food itself.

Sustainability – I care about protecting our island for future generations. From encouraging mindful travel to simple acts like picking up after ourselves, respect for nature is non-negotiable.

Connection – Food is about people. It brings us together, creates memories, and builds bridges between locals and visitors.
